Does paintball hurt?
A little — for a moment. Most players describe a hit as a sharp flick or sting that fades within a minute. How much you feel it depends on the distance, where you're hit and, most of all, what you're wearing.
Hits on bare or thinly covered skin can leave a small round bruise for a few days. Hits through a hoodie or padded clothing are usually just a tap.
Why paintball stings less than people expect
Fields keep markers to a safe speed, use minimum shooting distances, and have marshals on every game. In the heat of a game, adrenaline means most players barely notice a hit until someone shouts that they're out.
What to wear to paintball
The single best way to make paintball sting less is what you wear:
- Old, comfortable clothes you don't mind getting dirty.
- Long sleeves and full-length trousers — no shorts or T-shirts on their own.
- Layers: a hoodie or sweatshirt over a T-shirt takes most of the sting out.
- Trainers or boots with good grip — fields can be muddy and uneven.
- Gloves to protect your hands, which are a common target.
- A beanie or cap under the mask in winter (most fields provide or sell head protection).
What not to wear
- Anything you'd be upset to get muddy.
- Open shoes, sandals or heels.
- Jewellery and loose items that can get lost.
- Thin, tight clothing on its own.
Does paintball paint wash out?
Yes — paintballs are filled with a water-soluble paint that washes out of clothes in a normal wash. Mud is usually the harder part, so pick clothes accordingly.
